WCAR Human Rights Round Table Thursday, January 29, 2009, 10.30 am to 4.00 pm The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial, Educational and Cultural Center 3940 Broadway, Harlem, NY (at 165th Street) African-Americans Mobilizing Civil Society at the Historic Audubon Ballroom The week after Barack Obama's inauguration, a distinguish panel of African descendents community leaders and thinkers will gather to address the issues of racism in a historical and projective manner in anticipation of the Durban World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) Review held by the United Nations in April 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland. The Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial, Educational and Cultural Center (The Shabazz Center) will host a WCAR Human Rights Round Table beginning at 10:30am on January 29th 2009. The Round Table will provide an opportunity for community leaders from the African Diaspora to revisit the implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA) and create an agenda for re-engaging to the USA government to this critical forum. According to Dowoti Désir, Executive Director of The Shabazz Center, "Lest we forget, in spite of the historic changes that have occurred with the election of Barack Obama to the US presidency, xenophobia and racism have not magically disappeared neither from the American landscape nor the world community. The magnitude of the global economic watershed we are awash in will only further the grip of those elements unwilling to relinquish exploitative or predatory economic practices on societies they have historically preyed upon. The US must return not only symbolically but meaningfully to the table of world leaders supporting the DDPA" The Round Table will host a wide variety of opinions, ideas, and perspectives from politicians, journalists and civil rights activists. James Early, Director of Cultural Heritage Policy at the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at Smithsonian Institution; Karen Juanita Carrillo, journalist and United Nations Representative, Milton Allimadi, Publisher of the Black Star News; Zeinab Eyega, Director of Sauti Yetu Center for African Women Center; Robert Fullilove, former SNCC Secretary; Marselha Goncalves Margerin, Advocacy Director of the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights Amiri Baraka, activist and poet ...are among the participants to this day-long discussion. Malaak Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X, will co-facilitate the discussion with Dowoti Désir. The rendezvous will launch and generate further discourse of the Durban Review Conference. Issues of racism, contemporary and new forms of discrimination and classicism will be addressed with vigorous discussion and proposed solutions.
