WILL TRANFORMER FILMING DESTROY HISTORIC ROSENWALD BUILDING SCHEDULED FOR REHAB ???
Transformer 3 movie production comes to Bronzeville 47th Street

Attention: Bronzeville and Chicago Land Area
Meet us on the block (47th and Michigan Avenue) Northwest corner news stand 12 Noon - 1PM - Thursday
Many residents in the immediate Bronzeville area are aware of the upcoming Transformer 3 movie
by producer Michael Bay that is being filmed at the Rosenwald Apartments (Michigan Blvd Garden
Apartments) built in 1929 by Julius Rosenwald. The building location is 46th and Michigan, 47th and
Michigan, 46th and Wabash and 47th and Wabash. Many residents should also be aware that the
building which is a national historical site is due to be rehabbed and re-inhabited over the
next upcoming years.
Many residents in the immediate area have been informed of the movie filming through flyers that
have been handed out that state "the Chicago Fire Department will be assisting our Special Effects
Department in performing controlled explosions, smoke effects and fireballs during the course of
the weekend." This may cause damage to the building which is a historical site and is due
to be rehabbed and re-inhabited.
The media has not publicized the fact that the Rosenwald Building (Michigan Blvd Gardens Apartments)
is one of the sites in the city being used for the movie. Also the city has signed an agreement with the
filmmakers promising the city a cut of the movies profits as well as a tax right off. The Dreamworks
Company will receive a 35% tax write off from the State of Illinois Film Office. The Rosenwald building
also sits in the middle of the 47th and King Drive TIF which makes the community eligible for additional
resources if community residents are allowed in the process. This money will be put in the city budgets
to be used to the cities discretion. Business and residents of the Bronzeville community should urge
the city to use this money in the Bronzeville community or petition filmmakers to give businesses
and residents in the Bronzeville community a cut of its profits directly.
