Chicago-Midwest

A Constitutional Amendment is purposefully a hard thing to bring into existence. It requires an unambiguous statement from the American People that they want to make a fundamental change in society. They want to make an addition to the Constitution of the United States of America. It requires two-thirds of the House and Senate to approve of the proposal and send it to the states for a vote. Then, three-fourths of the states must affirm the proposed Amendment. It has only been done 27 times in our history. And at least 4 of those times were based on our creed that; “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal”. It was America’s voice.

That voice gave us the 13th (ending slavery), 14th (equal protection), 15th (voting rights) and 24th (Poll Tax) amendments. Those amendments were all milestones made by that voice. That voice of the American People was embodied by the Civil Rights Movement. The last great effort of that voice wasn’t in Birmingham or Selma; it was in Chicago; it was in North Lawndale. It was to be another milestone.

The latest result of those earlier milestones is President Obama. He’s president today because the American People said he should be president. They said it with the 13th, 14th 15th and 24th Amendments and they said it with their votes.

What a confluence of events that led to the first Black President coming from the same city where the last great effort was made by that earlier voice to “live out the true meaning of its creed…” Let President Obama’s Presidential Library stand in recognition of that voice; of our voice. Let his presidential library be built in North Lawndale. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Westside-Presidential-Library/366984393416815
