Soften Up Your Leather Jacket

PRCM_1137_M.jpgBy: William Turner ] Leather jackets look their best when they are well used. Their appeal shines through when they look like they have been worn a few times and have become a second skin! A new leather jacket is usually like a new cotton top. It’s quite starchy and stiff. A leather jacket too is quite on the stiff side when just purchased. Everyone loves that butter soft flexible feel of a well worn leather jacket, and you have to typically wait for it to "break in" before it gets soft. However, sometimes you just have to hurry the process yourself because the whole breaking in process could take years if you do not use it regularly.

Here are a few excellent tips to make your leather jacket look worn and make it softer without damaging it. This process may take a while too but is quite simple. All you need to soften your jacket is a leather conditioner, microfiber towel and a blow dryer. Below is a step-by-step approach on how to soften your new leather jacket:

1. The first thing you need to remember is that your leather jacket is made of natural animal skin, and you have to treat it pretty much the way you would treat yours. Just as you would use cream for dry skin in winters so also you have to care for your leather jacket!

2. Use a microfiber towel to apply a leather conditioner o your leather jacket. The conditioners are easily available in the market. While making the leather jacket pliable and soft they also help to protect and moisturize it!

3. Rub in the leather conditioner deep into the jacket with firm strokes of the towel for the best results. The more moisturized the jacket, the better the outcome!

4. Once the entire jacket has been coated with the conditioner, crumple up the jacket with your hands. Crush the leather all the way from the shoulders to the cuffs. This ensures that the conditioner is well settled into even the tiniest nooks and crevices of the jacket thus yielding the best results

5. Once you have done this, repeat the process with another layer of conditioner.

6. Take a blow dyer and put it on medium heat. Don’t choose blow dryers that do not let you adjust the heat as it may lead to negative results due to over or under heating. We only need to warm the jacket as this will help to both soak up and seal in the conditioner into the jacket. While blow drying the jacket, make sure that you keep the blow dryer at least 6 inches away from the jacket and keep moving the dryer around without focusing on one spot for too long!

7. Once this is complete, use another microfiber towel devoid of any conditioner and give the leather jacket a good rub down again. This will help give it a nice shine.

Once you follow these simple steps, you will automatically notice a big difference in the softness, pliability and flexibility of the leather jacket!
