I am surprised at the mildness of the criticism of the racism of the mighty president Trump. This even includes Democratic leaders. I thought Trump’s anti-latino, anti-Muslim, anti-Mexican, anti-immigrant white racism would never get him elected. I underestimated the number of Americans who would vote for such a reprehensible racist. With my high opinion of America, I did not believe so many could sink so low. That is why we Democrats were elated when Trump won the Republican nomination.
I think the tepid response to Trump’s racism comes from the fact that white racism benefits both the white racists and the white non-racists. White racism bestows white privilege and all whites benefit from that, racist or not. For example they will get the better jobs, be first hired and last fired, promoted first and receive all the other benefits of being white.
I think Trump is counting on this. Although they are not racists and even deplore white racism, they will do nothing much about it. Lots of people are apathetic anyhow. But this is not the time for apathy. It is the time for outrage against this disgraceful menace. A white racist president should not be tolerated in America if we want to be true to our values and we do. If not, heaven help us all.
