Letter to EPA

It is imperative that ExxonMobil abide by the rules.  This is not to say that there are not other petrochemical companies which are not playing fair but ExxonMobil is the biggest.    The basics of truly announcing  in a timely manner each and every time there is a leak, spill or fugitive emission is important.       This is not just important to people who live close to the plant but , it is important to people who,  go to school, visit, work, play and drive by the 225 acres of former river front which is now  Exxon property.     We live in a mobile society,  what Exxon does affects us all.

As can be expected,  Exxon has one of the most  polished public relations systems in the world however even EPA’s own surprised inspection report shows them to be less than perfect neighbors.  We contend that unless there are strong finds and penalties for the violation for the past 5 years highlighted in your report , they will not improve.

It is a disgrace that a company with the profits and international power of Exxon would let its working structures, pipes and equipment  deteriorate to the point it has to date.  For those of us  watching on  the opposite side of the gate  it appears that ExxonMobil  is without true regard for the people of the great state of Louisiana.  Their disregard for the natural beauty, safety  and legacy of this state must be checked.  In our eyes the only agency equipped for this task is the Environmental Protection Agency.   We urge you to use all your remaining power to get the largest petrochemical company in line and the smaller companies will be much easier.

Further we call upon you to not approve another air permit until this company comes  fully in compliance.

Please do not let Exxon sweet talk you into turning your head while giving a slight tap on the wrist.  We the people are depending on you and the integrity of your agency to put us first.

We are looking forward to further dialogue.  Should you need us feel free to call up on us.
