ROSELAND COMMUNITY HOSPITAL: THE TRANSFORMATION

Chicago Southside Community Hospital Perseveres Through Economic Turmoil to Restore Image and Continue Excellence in Providing Healthcare

Exciting, new, state of the art are just a few of the words one would use in describing Roseland Community Hospital (RCH) as of late. RCH has filtered over $16 million dollars into new and refurbished units and hospital equipment. The radiology department was one of the first units to be upgraded with a nuclear medicine camera. The camera allows for detailed pictures of various parts of the body in black and white and in color revealing vital organ functions whereas the X-ray only captures mere black and white snapshot images. The OB Unit not only was renovated but also installed a complete telemetry system capable of monitoring baby and mother from remote locations within the hospital. The most noticeable change is the expansion of the emergency room which has almost doubled in size to 15,000 sq ft and 19 bays. The ER features a waiting room with a capacity of up to 50 people, with immediate access to triage, admitting, and registration.

The hospital has plans to invest over $30 million more in new developments and technology including a brand new 30-bed Adolescent Behavioral Unit (ABU) with Acute Intensive Care Services. The ABU, scheduled to open in spring of 2011, will be housed on the newly renovated 2nd fl of the hospital. RCH has also committed $5 million to Electronic Medical Records (EMR). EMR will improve overall organization and efficiency and eliminate a lot of time spent writing notes and not to mention time spent seeing the doctor. EMR won’t become mandatory for all hospitals until 2013 but RCH is aggressively moving ahead to improve overall quality of patient services and take advantage of federal rebates for meeting ‘meaningful use’ guidelines.

RCH has been able to navigate through a tough economy and remain one of the few community hospitals still standing. The hospital underwent a leadership makeover in December of 2009 with board members Earmon Irons and Catherine Nichols being appointed CEO and President respectively. Since then, the hospital has taken a new direction and vision.

The Roseland Community Hospital Association would like to share this vision with community residents, other service providers, elected officials and vendors who have helped to transform ‘The New Roseland Community Hospital’. An open house and tours of the facilities will be held Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 11am-12pm beginning in the Multi-Purpose Conference Room at 45 W. 111th Street, Chicago, Il 60628. Confirmed guests include Dr. Damon Arnold, Director of Illinois Department of Public Health; Illinois State Senator Emil Jones III; Alderwoman Carrie Austin of the 34th ward.
