The Newark Anti-Violence Coalition (NAVC) week of rallies and engagements, Newark, NJ.

The Newark Anti-Violence Coalition Rallies Wednesday

On Wednesday, August 5th, the Newark AntiViolence Coalition (NAVC) will host a rally for “Peace In the Streets” to condemn a recent shooting near 13th Avenue School.
The rally takes place on 9th Street and 13th Avenue at 6p.m.
It is done to help the neighborhood come together and heal after the incident.

Participates in Occupy Newark

On Saturday, August 8th, the Newark AntiViolence Coalition will proudly participate in Mayor Baraka’s ‘Occupy The City’ AntiViolence Walk.
Participants will march from locations out of each of the city’s five wards. The NAVC will march from the South Ward location, which is Brunswick and Astor Streets. Participants will gather at 3pm and march to Broad and Market Streets.
Since his election, Mayor Baraka has employed a number of participatory strategies to combat gun violence including the creation of Street Teams, Occupy The Block, Community Engagement Walks and other partnerships. The NAVC has been organically involved with each of these efforts.

Observes 6th Anniversary

On Sunday, August 9ththe Newark AntiViolence Coalition will host a gathering to observe its sixth anniversary at the Center For Hope, 84 Clinton Avenue from 2-6pm.
The NAVC was launched on July 20th, 2009 as a direct action response to the senseless killing of Nakeisha Allen, a single mother in broad daylight on Elizabeth and Meeker Avenues.
Then Councilman Ras Baraka led outraged community participants in the shutting down of that block that following Wednesday. It led to a historic 155 straight weeks of shutting down city blocks and city traffic to confront indifference on the issue of gun violence from city leadership, important institutions and from the community itself!
Sunday’s gathering will examine how the NAVC has grown and transformed its work beyond its cutting edge protests.
For more information about these and other NAVC efforts, please call us at 908-605-NAVC…
