President Nkurunziza is not only undermining his people, he is undermining the entire East Africa Community in particular and Africa Union at large. One can ask why other leaders are in similar situation why we are hard only on him? Most neighboring countries to Burundi, or in the continent will follow the footsteps of Nkurunziza, in the absence of strong institution in the region.
Africa Union leaders, including the current chairman Robert Mugabe, made light of the situation and openly joked about it during the recently concluded 25th Africa Union Summit. The problem is, no one is laughing, and the deteriorating situation in Burundi is hugely a significant blow to AU. It brand credibility is certainly dented thanks to a complete absence of proactive engagements.
Which African leaders can criticize Nkurunziza, with confidence by saying enough is enough; in our analyses, none. One of the reasons being, neither the institutions of Burundi nor the public has the adequate mechanism to stop this illegal bid for a third term, clearly this is complete failure on the part of leadership and a lack of fortitude by the African Union.
After all, the AU was supposed to be the principal guarantor of the Arusha Agreement, which ended Burundi’s civil war in 2000 – the agreement which Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term blatantly violates. AU is not the only culprit here, even those organizations and individuals taking shot at Nkurunziza are to be attributed the blame as well for not earlier responsibly enough to avert this carnage carried out by the Burundian regime. Nevertheless now is a time to look forward a peaceful solution how to correct the devastated effect of the process not a time to make more suffering on the citizens of Burundian by imposing unnecessary sanction and exclusion the government.
