On Thursday, February 18th, the People’s Organization for Progress will present its rare Leadership Award to The Open Line Radio Show at their weekly General Assembly Meeting.
The meeting takes place at Abyssinian Baptist Church, 224 West Kinney Street, Newark. Doors will open at 6:30pm.
The Open Line has been an important community radio outlet the greater New York African-American community for 27 years. An important fixture on WBLS-FM Radio 107.5, it is rated by Talkers Magazine  as one of most important 100 talk radio shows in the country.
When it comes to important issues like police brutality and economic justice among others, Open Line has always had its lines ‘open’ for P.O.P. Chairman Lawrence Hamm…
The Open Line team consists of music business vet Bob Slade and attorney and former judge Bob Pickett…

HOSTS BERNIE SANDERS’ REPRESENTATIVE

In that same meeting, P.O.P. will also host Bernie Sanders’ NJ representative Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Sayreville).
On January 21st, the organization’s general assembly voted to break from their historical practice of not endorsing candidates and decided to join their chairman Lawrence Hamm and endorse the Sanders Presidency Campaign.
Bernie Sanders is the first openly Socialist to get this far in a major national election.
Hamm may very well have been the first high profile Black leader in the state to officially endorse Sanders over Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The organization, which followed weeks later after a rigorous internal debate, may very well have been the first high profile majority Black social justice organization in the state to endorse Sanders.
Sanders’ big win in New Hampshire is beginning to get attention in the Black community. Hillary Clinton has enjoyed considerably more support from mainstream elements in the Black community. It remains to be seen how much that will change.
P.O.P. has only endorsed candidates three times in its 33 year history. They voted to support President Obama in 2008 and again in 2012. Two years ago, they decided to support Ras Baraka’s bid to become Mayor of  Newark.
