KHALIFAH ROLE MODEL AND MENTOR TRANSITIONS
DR. IMARI OBADELE WAS CO-FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT
OF THE REPUBLIC OF NEW AFRIKA & N’COBRA AS WELL AS AUTHOR OF SEVERAL DOZEN BOOKS
By H. Khalif Khalifah
SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA – A legend in his own time, Dr. Imari Abubakari Obadele, a Co-Founding President of the Republic of New Afrika and N’COBRA, two of the signature Black organizations of the 20th Century, in North America has transitioned.
The announcement was made on January 19, 2010 by the Chairman of the PCC (Peoples Citizen Council) of the Republic of New Afrika. Dr Obadele will be
recorded in History Among the constellation of Freedom bound Black people who
never gave in or gave up to recapture everything about Afrikan people that was
Stolen, Lost of compromised by those who think the best avenue to Freedom,
Justice and Equality is being comfortable enough with the confines of the White
Supremacist based system that was founded on Black blood, sweat, tears and
brains, to be equal within.
It is fairly well known about the great formations Dr.Obadele founded: The Republic of New Afrika and N’COBRA (The National Coalition of Blacks For Reparations in America.
No doubt, members of the two formation, that are still very actively struggling
to hold firm to the principles and standards that were instilled into them in
1968 and 1987 respectively; BUT what is not so well known is the sheer, total
impact his life and work had on Black individuals who were never members of
both, or either of the organizations.
As one of my Mentors told me that the Undaunted Carlos A. Cooks said about him, many whose lives Dr. Obadele positively impacted “do not carry the card, but they have the heart!”
I will not venture to use anyone as an example save myself. I am yet to become a “card carrying” member of the RNA” but only because I was advised by someone in position to wisely advise me not to become one. For after reading a little out
of print book called “Foundations of the Black Nation,” this book gave me
practical use and application, not only for my faith and belief in the
Teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, but my budding skills as a
journalist, would-be publisher. So with my Spirituality firmly intact via the
NOI, I went to work. Dr. Imari A. Obadele was a Role Model that was destined to
also become a Mentor in Independent
Institutions for Nation Building.
After a successful career as a Publisher, I was of a mind to do more than just cover the stories about Liberation Struggle of Black people. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad had transitioned several years prior, but the opportunity to work day
to day, week to week, month to month, or year to year, or whatever the case may
be necessary to get the job done, I joined N’COBRA primarily because Dr. Imari
A. Obadele was there.
Dr. Obadele had been in poor health in recent years: so after I assumed a different vantage point vs N’COBRA, early in this century, the closeness with him waned. He has been missed in my life
over the prior few years; now no doubt his missing will be with the mixed
emotion of pain of his passing; and unbridled appreciation for having the
opportunity to work in formation with him for some ten years of my life
H. Khalif Khalifah lives on a farm in Southampton County, Virginia. He is a former 6-term member on The National Board of Director of N’COBRA, 1996 to 2002. Co-Chair of the Human Resources of N’COBRA, Contributor to ENCOBRA magazine and Liaison for N’COBRA to the Million
Man March, Ocbober 16, 1995. Like Dr. Obadele he has written several books
himself, one of which is called “A Brief History About N’COBRA & The
Reparations Movement.” He has also been the Publisher for more than 600 books
that are written, by for or about Black people’ as well as hundreds of
thousands of newspapers, magazines & etc. over the past four decades. www.natturnertrail.com khalifah23844@yahoo.com
