On Thursday, January 19th, Friends of the Congo presents "Commemorating Lumumba and the Telema Martyrs," a film screening, forum and cultural affair with Congolese dance and drumming. Inspired by the teachings and ideas of Patrice Lumumba, Congolese youth are waging a dignified battle for justice in the heart of Africa.
On January 19, 2015 Congolese youth launched a four-day resistance against President Joseph Kabila's attempt to remain in power via changes in an electoral law that would require a census before holding elections, which would result in the extension of Kabila's stay in power beyond December 19, 2016 by an estimated three to four years. The youth resistance which resulted in 44 dead, hundreds injured and over 400 jailed prevailed in that it caused the Congolese parliament to withdraw the law.
Friends of the Congo and its supporters will commemorate these martyrs as we commemorate the life of Patrice Emery Lumumba, one of Congo's independence heroes and first democratically elected Prime Minister who was assassinated on January 17, 1961.
