[by Darrell Garrett] In America, the rich and the influential get served first - politically, socially and financially. Everybody else falls in the back of the line fighting for the goods and services that they need. This is not racist, sexist or homophobic, it is simply a fact. The groups in power make the rules and dictate the policies that favor them. Too often we confuse the actions of the rich and powerful with actions against minorities. Most of the time the actions of politicians and corporations are not designed specifically to hurt a group, they are designed to help themselves.

Banks don’t put branches in the hood because these branches don’t make money for them. Wells Fargo will open 5 new branches in Beverly Hills before they open 1 branch in Compton because that’s where the money is. The bank is not being racist; it is simply doing what is good for business. If all the black people in Compton became rich Wells Fargo executives would fall all over themselves adding branches as fast as they could. It’s not a race issue for Wells Fargo, it’s a money issue.

Almost every policy that the tea party advocates for favors white Americans and are to the detriment of Mexicans and African Americans. From the elimination of welfare, abolishing the minimum wage, immigration reform, and the privatization of social security, the tea party agenda could be seen as the agenda against the black and the brown. But closer inspection shows us that it is not an agenda against minorities, it is an agenda in favor of working, capitalistic people. It just so happens that many blacks are not working and on some form of government assistance – both directly counter to the tea party agenda. Because a) many Blacks and Mexicans are poor and government enabled and b) the tea party hates poor and government enabled people, c) the tea party must be racist. Hopefully you can see the flaw in that logic. If the tea party were a completely racist organization (like the Ku Klux Klan) they would not have elected Alan West to congress in Florida or the many other black candidates they have endorsed or helped to elect. It's not a race issue for the tea party, it is an agenda issue.

With all that being said, we know that there are racist elements in major corporations, and that racists and homophobes exist in the tea party. These realities of life however should not cover up the real motivation behind decisions made by many of the individuals, corporations and politicians who have the power to shape society. The higher you go up the financial food chain green becomes the only color that matters, not black or brown. It’s not about race, gender and sex it’s about money, power and respect.

  • to whom it may concern,

again, we have another attempt to misguide OUR people on the part of those who claim to be black and have an excellent understanding of the concrete conditions of Afrikans-n-ameriKKKa. if it's not about race, then how come is it that all the persons with the money and power are white? name me one Black person with money and power. if it's not about gender, which is quite incorrect, then how come Black women are at the bottom of the heap when it comes to standards of living?

what you should have been saying was that the white collective and its ruling class have kept themselves in a dominant position via money and power, which they've accumulated through violence, beginning with the slave trade, and that sexism had been added to the problems that Black women have had to face, in the face of race, and class.

only to the extent that Black people need power that i can agree with your otherwise misleading and pompous statements. the problem is simply white power which drives the white supremacist power structure disguised as obamaism and the mythical post-racial society.

Unfortunately, you are both correct. I use the word unfortunately because our oppressors greatest enemy is "divide and conquer", which Brother Hendrix fell for.

Racism is but one to the strategies our oppressor uses to "divide and conquer" the masses - black, white, hispanic, asian, etc. Consider religion, class, education, shades of skin color, political parties, political persuasion, etc. are all used to keep the masses at one another's throats.

Meanwhile, we fail to notice that this same oppressor has created an ingenious commercial system that forces the masses to "work" for food, clothing and shelter while burdening themselves with debt to the same oppressor.

Remember, before we met the oppressor, we had no debt. We were no slaves to an economic system that costs the masses more and more each year to maintain their "standard of living". But we were taught that we were the "savages", unable to care for ourselves. Where was our oppressor for the thousands of years we existed before we met them?

We must save ourselves and avoid confrontations with one another. We must recognize the "divide and conquer" technique before we fall into it, IMHO.

May the Most High watch over and keep all of us and teach to value unity, cooperative economics and drive toward self-sustainability. Shalom, my family.
