Affordable Care Act and the Future of Minority Health Outcomes

2014 Symposium on U.S. Healthcare to Focus on Addressing Health Disparities and Building Community Health

President Obama's healthcare legislation, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), has brought the nation closer to healthcare reform . The ACA contains many provisions that make it more important than ever for doctors, healthcare providers and healthcare communicators to work together and address the new challenges and opportunities provided by the ACA and improve the quality of care for racial and ethnic minorities.

In response, the 2014 Symposium on U.S. Healthcare, hosted by Howard University's Initiative on Democracy, Markets, Communications and Technology, will provide a unique opportunity for health professionals, students, and community leaders to examine key issues in healthcare. The Symposium will take place on Thursday, April 10 from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. in the Armour J. Blackburn University Center on the campus of Howard University.

Begun by the School of Communications in 2009, with a Carnegie Corporation grant, the Howard University Initiative on Democracy, Markets, Communications and Technology has grown to include almost all schools and colleges on the campus. Symposium participants will have the opportunity to help set a research agenda, make policy recommendations, network with influential leaders within the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and help establish a youth leadership pipeline.

The 2014 Symposium on U.S. Healthcare is helping to establish new communication systems for healthcare messages and information to reach deeper into our communities-addressing many overlooked needs. As such Howard University has invited one of the most dynamic change-makers in the STEM fields, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski to give the event's keynote address. At age 12, Dr. Hrabowski marched with Martin Luther King. Now as president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), he works to create an environment that helps under-represented students -- specifically African-American, Latino and low-income learners -- obtain degrees in the STEM fields. Other notable speakers include: Reggie Van Lee, Executive Vice President of Booz Allen Hamilton, Dr. Kevin Maxwell, CEO of the Prince Georges County Public Schools, Dr. Rick Valachovic, President and CEO of the American Dental Education Association, and WUSA9 Anchor, Lesli Foster, who will serve as the moderator for the Symposium.

Students and community members will have the opportunity to participate in Q and A sessions centered on how the ACA can help to reduce disparities and increase community knowledge about personal health.  Those unable to join the Symposium in person can take part in the discussion by following on Twitter by the hash tag #HealthyHU.

In addition to lunch, there will be light refreshments offered during the registration session and a mix and mingle reception/ and research poster session immediately following the Symposium. Public transportation is strongly encouraged for those planning to attend this event as campus parking will be limited.  There will be a free Howard shuttles available from Shaw - Howard Metro to Blackburn University Center.
