Cooperation Jackson will be hosting a Southern focused People’s Movement Assembly Friday, June 26th through Sunday, June 28th. This People’s Movement Assembly will focus on the struggle for a Just Transition to economic democracy and the end of the extractive, dead-end capitalist economy.

The Just Transition Assembly will be hosted at the Chokwe Lumumba Center for Economic Democracy and Development. Space for this Assembly will be fairly limited. The gathering in Jackson will accommodate a maximum of 300 people, and will place an emphasis on the Southeast region and the commitment of participants to engage in a long-term struggle towards an anti-capitalist just transition.

We aim for this message to clarify the statement sent to the National Planning Committee (NPC) and the wider world on Wednesday, March 25th by representatives of the Accountability and Coordinating Team (ACT). Unfortunately, this message conveyed some outdated information about activities taking place in Jackson, Mississippi related to the 2015 US Social Forum.

We hope that this message clarifies what will occur in Jackson. Given the very limited resources of the Forum and the charged political atmosphere locally, the allied progressive forces in Jackson had to be very strategic about what could and should be done in relationship to the Social Forum and how it relates to our various long-term pursuits and strategies. Cooperation Jackson in particular has to be very strategic to ensure that our events and activities give us the best leverage to successfully engage in the protracted struggle to implement the Jackson-Kush Plan. Since the passing of Mayor Chokwe Lumumba we have been able to make some significant strides, but threats are mounting and we to have to be strategic to address them sufficiently.

We are presently confronting new, unchartered territory with the announcement of a “state of emergency” by our present Mayor, Tony Yarber, on March 26th.  This “state of emergency” could essentially be the equivalent of the anti-democratic “emergency manager” initiatives instituted in Michigan, or something new entirely that could be just as undemocratic or potentially transformative in a progressive way. We are not sure at this time. But, what we are sure of is that we have to focus our time and energy on protecting and extending the gains of our local social movements.

We hope all those who were planning on coming to Jackson for a full _expression_ of the Forum will continue to support our work above and beyond the Forum and stay in contact with us by joining our email list (join at http://www.cooperationjackson.org/contact-list/) and following us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/CooperationJackson) and Twitter (@CooperationJXN).

We look forward to a strong, successful, and transformative Social Forum process in June.
