I also watched the Obama news conference and it more or less confirmed what I had projected from earlier evidence gathered that the jobs available for the upcoming days, months and years ahead requires us to have one of three things: Your own business, education or a union card.
You will need your own business to attract any significant tax cut. You need education because the jobs he spoke of requires schools to be built with science and math labs. The housing jobs he spoke of requires building, upgrading and outfitting homes and businesses to be extremely energy efficient. Building, upgrading and outfitting energy efficient homes requires skilled labor union cards.
Why bother calling and crying to your congress person when you know what is required for you or any of us for that matter to position us to receive a fair portion of the re-distribution of wealth?

I agree with your general points about owning your own business, being educated, and participating in Unions…Ahh if only this was a perfect world
But I disagree with your statement, Why bother calling and crying to your congress person. What if Obama, MLK, or Fredrick Douglas had felt that way
We as a people must loose this attitude of hopelessness, and victimhood. In order to win it….you must be in it!!!

Obama, MLK nor Fredrick Douglas never cried to the government. Obama got into politics and confronted the government head-on and now he is president of the U.S.A. Martin Luther king did not cry to the government . He told black people to forget about "Burn baby Burn" he told them to "Organize baby organize" Fredrick Douglas was so defiant and head strong that the slave masters sent him to a particular slave master with a reputation for being a negro breaker.
During the Katrina flood there were hundreds of black people stranded in the Astro Dome but throughout the entire ordeal not one African American hero emerged. If necessity breeds invention and African Americans are recognized for inventing then how come not one African American invention or innovation emerged from such a dire situation?
The point is: What good is black unity if no one African American has the education, resources or know-how to organize, take control or take command of such a dire situation that requires know-how, intelligence and strategy.
In as much as your particular congress person may wish to aid or abet us we first have a responsibility to give the individual representing, supporting or defending us something to work with and fight with.
If all we are doing is calling our congress person with our hands out we are no better than the Katrina victims that without education, knowledge, vision or know-how could do nothing for themselves but wait in despair and depend upon the mercy and compassion of strangers.
With a business, education or skilled trade you can give your congress person something to fight in your behalf with. Don't simply call your congress person with nothing to contribute but the demands of; give me, lend me, can you spare, take me here, take me there.
You are asking African Americans harboring bachelor degrees, science, math, industrial mechanic, business administration, masters, PhD's and doctorate degrees coming out of colleges, universities and graduate schools to call their congress person for the expressed purpose of presenting their demands for jobs. You would think that they would call their congress person to offer their services.
It is appalling and staggers the imagination how someone can ask young black Americans here and abroad to call or stand before the President and Congress of the 21st century with their hands and pockets out making demands.
Where's our dignity and self-respect? Ask not what Obama or your congress person can do for you but ask youself what responsibility do you have to help Obama or your congress person to help you
Organize baby organize. Start a business, educate you, join a buliding trades union. Read, write and with articulation of thought and action give the presidentand/or congress person something to help us think, work and earn our way out of extinction with tax cuts, well paying jobs and intelligent strategies.
