Event Description

11th Annual African Landing Day Commemoration Festival Sponsored by Project 1619

Project 1619, Hampton, VA will be hosting the 11th Annual African Landing Day Commemoration Festival from August 24-25, 2018. The first enslaved Africans brought to English occupied North America were taken and sold at Point Comfort, present day Fort Monroe in Hampton, on August 25, 1619. The festival is a commemoration of their arrival and the subsequent beginning of chattel slavery, 400 years of social, economic, educational, political, and policing disparities.

Hampton, VA, August 01, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Project 1619 is the only organization in the United States who commemorates the first arrival of enslaved Africans brought to English occupied North America in 1619. Come to Hampton, Virginia and experience a commemoration of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans brought to Colonial Virginia on August 25, 1619. Feel their spirit as you walk along their hallowed grounds. Then take a moment to rationalize the harshness of their of disposition. To be captured from their homeland, taken from their family, branded, sold, shipped to a location unknown, beaten and raped, and be forced to work free for the rest of their lives. The festival includes a Juneteenth Jazz Concert; screening of the film "I Am Not Your Negro," a documentary on the unfinished manuscript by James Baldwin; the outdoor festival featuring African dancers and drummers and youth groups; Libation; Pilgrimage Prayer for Reconciliation and Healing from the Legacy of Enslavement; and the traditional throwing of flower petals into the ocean to honor those millions of lives lost coming through the Middle Passage. Drum Call for all drummers to meet at Continental Park at Fort Monroe at 11 am.
